Many studies into surgical methods use live porcine models because of the pig’s biological closeness to human patients.

This includes experimental liver surgeries. Although pig and human livers are shaped quite differently, a pig’s liver is divided into the same number of segments and contains a similar vascular system structure as a human liver.

Porcine tissue can also help in liver transplant patients. A 2016 study in Austria found that porcine non-cross-biological patches could help with hernia repair – as hernias are common after orthotropic liver transplants.

And porcine liver tissues have also helped with research into ablation, a method of treating liver tumors. This includes both thermal ablation and microwave ablation.

Porcine liver tissues have also helped improve outcomes for liver transplant patients and the repair of abdominal wall hernias.
