Research Swine Complex

ABI’s multipurpose swine buildings were built with the future in mind. They are combinations of separately isolated areas for breeding, gestation, weaning, growing and holding animals. The purpose is to increase production in order to meet the demands of our clientele as well as create an atmosphere that allows ABI to produce the healthiest research swine in the industry.

ABI houses newly bred sows and gilts in gestation crates that help keep them stress-free during the critical embryonic implantation stage. This also insures increased litter size and healthier piglets.

ABI has several buildings dedicated to growing research pig models. Young pigs enter these areas once they leave the nursery and will grow there in dedicated pens until sold. Each growing room has plastic flooring, extra-large stainless steel feeders, kem-lite lined walls and hepa filtered air. All animals receive 100% fresh filtered incoming air. Each room has a computer-monitored climate controlled system as well as camera systems that allow for bio-security and observation.

The Value of Animal Growth Charts in Biomedical Research

Our porcine growth chart allows clients to know the expected rate (average daily gain) of growth over time of our Yorkshire cross bred swine herd at all ages.
