A Study of Ultrasound Elastography Using Porcine Renal Tissue

Animal Models with Porcine Renal TissuePorcine renal tissue is useful in studying ultrasound elastography, a method of measuring the graft health of a transplanted kidney.

A recent study by researchers at the University of British Columbia found that blood pressure plays a role as a confounding factor in measuring the elasticity of the renal tissue.

The use of a porcine renal tissue – in a controlled set-up – was crucial in calculating the flow from a peristaltic pump. The higher pump’s input pressure, the more elasticity was measured in the tissue.

This finding, as published in the 2016 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium, suggests that the cardiac cycle should be considered in renal elastography by use of an electrocardiogram monitor.

In the past, we’ve reported how porcine tissue has helped researchers study things such as spinal cord injuries, dermal burn healing and pancreatic cancer.

For more than 20 years, Animal Biotech has helped biomedical researchers study human ailments by using porcine renal tissue and other pig models.
